Is the address in the road traffic register changed automatically?

Yes. The population registration with Skatteverket automatically notifies your new address to Transportstyrelsen, so vehicle tax and other letters about the car come to the new address. If you have reported a special postal address to Skatteverket, Transportstyrelsen uses it, but you must change it yourself. If you move abroad, you need to notify Transportstyrelsen of a Swedish address where you can receive, for example, the payment card for vehicle tax.

Residential parking in the new municipality

Resident parking is linked to population registration. In Stockholm, you can apply if you are the registered owner of the vehicle and registered in an area with resident parking. If you move to a different area, you change the area in the e-service, which costs 300 kronor, and if you move to an address without resident parking, the city cancels the permit when it receives the information from the population registration. Malmö requires you to be registered at an approved address in the area, have a driving licence, be 18 years old, and be the owner of the car.

In Gothenburg, a permit that you do not cancel will continue to cost. Apply in the new area when flyttanmälan is registered (our advice). The rules for Gothenburg are stated under what you arrange with the City of Gothenburg.

Do I need to inform my car insurance that I am moving?

The premium for car insurance is calculated, among other things, based on where you live and what type of housing you have, according to the Consumers. Therefore, tell the insurance company that you have moved, so that the premium and terms match (our advice). A charging box is not normally included in car insurance, but some companies include a charging box or charging pole that you own.

Charging box in the new home

A charging point may only be installed by a registered electrical installation company, according to the Electrical Safety Authority. If you install a charging box in a single-family home or an owner-occupied apartment that you own, or in a tenant-owned apartment that you have, you are eligible for a tax reduction for green technology. In 2026, it is 50 per cent of the cost of labour and materials, up to 50,000 kronor per person and year. A new or expanded electrical centre does not provide a reduction.

If you rent and have a parking space in or near the house, you can request that the landlord install a charging point, at your expense. The landlord may only say no if there is a justified reason, and the dispute is tried by hyresnämnden. The rule does not apply when you rent a subletting. The Parliament has adopted a corresponding right for tenant-owned apartment owners.

Does the charging box come with the house?

The law says nothing special about charging boxes. Jordabalken counts fixed furnishings and equipment for permanent use as part of the building, but if it's about your charging box, we have not been able to verify. Therefore, write in the purchase contract whether the charging box should be included or dismantled (our advice).

Transport the car to the new location

If the car is not to be driven itself, you can transport it on a car trailer. What you are allowed to tow with your driving licence, and that moving cars does not give RUT tax deduction, is stated in step 5 of the move: moving day. The boat when moving

There is no general register for leisure boats where you change the address. A leisure boat that is at least 15 meters long must be registered in the ship register, and for boats between 5 and 15 meters, registration is voluntary. If the boat is registered and you have boat insurance or a boat spot, check yourself that they have your new address (our advice).

What to do with your car when moving

   Step 1: Make flyttanmälan to Skatteverket. Transportstyrelsen gets the address from there.
