Student move in eight steps
-
Step 1: Join the queues of SGS Studentbostäder and Chalmers Studentbostäder as soon as you plan to study in Gothenburg. Both accept you from the year you turn 17.
-
Step 2: Create an account on Boplats Väst and verify it with e-identification. It is free until you turn 22.
-
Step 3: Log in so the purchase site stays alive: at SGS at least once every twelfth month, at Chalmers Studentbostäder at least every sixth month.
-
Step 4: Join a student union when you have started. SGS gives three months of extra queue points once, and Chalmers Studentbostäder requires union membership when the preparatory queue points run out.

-
Step 6: Take out a home insurance policy that is valid from the move-in day. Chalmers Studentbostäder requires it in the agreement.
-
Step 7: Make flyttanmälan (notification of change of address) to Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency) at the latest one week after the move.
25 § folkbokföringslag (1991:481), checked 3 October 2026

How does the SGS housing queue work?
SGS Studentbostäder accepts you if you study or plan to study at least 15 credits per term at Gothenburg University or Chalmers, from the year you turn 17. Students at Linnaeus University who study on site in Gothenburg can also apply. PhD students can apply with at least 50 percent activity and an individual study plan. The queue is free.
You get one queue point for each day in the queue and keep them if you log in at least once every twelfth month. If you become a member of a student union at the University of Gothenburg or Chalmers, you get three months of extra queue points, once. You can have three active expressions of interest at the same time, and the five with the most queue points get a viewing offer. You book the viewing yourself with the one who lives there.
Once you have the contract, you have 24 hours to upload your certificate and four days to sign. If you miss the signing, the agreement is cancelled and the queue time is reset. If you decline, you are blocked for seven days, and if you do not respond at all within 30 days.

What is SGS priority room?
Before the start of the semester, SGS publishes single rooms and rooms with cooking facilities with priority for new students. You must be a new student at the University of Gothenburg or Chalmers and be registered outside the Gothenburg region on January 1 before the autumn or July 1 before the spring. The rooms are located under Studentbostad Express. The application is open for 24 hours.

What study requirements does SGS have?
You must pass at least 15 credits per term at Gothenburg University, Chalmers or Linnaeus University. SGS performs two study checks per year and retrieves the results automatically from Chalmers and Gothenburg University. If you study elsewhere, you upload the results certificate and registration certificate yourself. The one who has not taken their points and does not get a dispensation is terminated. SGS does not approve distance learning. You can live for a maximum of six years as a student and four years as a doctoral student.

How does Chalmers Studentbostäders queue work?
Chalmers Studentbostader rents to students at Chalmers and Gothenburg University and manages 2,382 apartments near the Johanneberg and Lindholmen campuses. You can register from 1 January of the year you turn 17. Before you are admitted, you collect preparatory queue points, one per day and up to 365. After that, membership in a student union is required: Chalmers Studentkår gives two queue points per day, the other unions in Göteborgs Förenade Studentkårer one.
Log in at least every sixth month, otherwise you will be deregistered and lose your queue time. The apartment goes to the one with the most queue points, and the points are reset when you get a home. Students in their first year at Chalmers have priority for a one-room apartment before the autumn, with separate notification of interest and lottery.
The study requirement is a passing result on at least 50 percent of full-time per term, and summer courses do not count. You can live there for a maximum of six years, with up to three years' extension as a doctoral student. In the agreement, you undertake to have home insurance, be registered in the apartment and be a member of a student union.

You can create an account when you have turned 17 and apply when you have turned 18. The account is free until you turn 22, then it costs 200 kr per year. Some student apartments are rented out as short-term contracts that expire when you have finished studying. Then you usually get to keep your queue days, but read the terms in each ad.

When should I sign up?
As early as the rules allow, since all three queues go by queue time. At SGS and Chalmers Studentbostäder, you can start the year you turn 17, even before you are admitted. Chalmers' preparatory queue points expire after 365 days and can only be collected once. If you plan to apply for a priority room at SGS: check where you are registered on January 1 or July 1.

How do I terminate my student accommodation?
At SGS, you cancel in the Boendeappen and receive a confirmation via email. The notice period is stated in the agreement, 1 to 2 calendar months, and is counted from the first day of the month after cancellation. If you cannot cancel digitally, email SGS cancellation form to customer service. SGS does not shorten the notice period afterwards.
At Chalmers Studentbostäder, you cancel on My pages under the Agreement tab and select the move-out date. The notice period is at least seven weeks, four weeks if you move within Chalmers Studentbostäder and three calendar months if you want to move at the beginning of a month. The confirmation will be sent via email within 14 days.
Jordabalken sets an upper limit: a tenant can always terminate a rental apartment to a month change at the earliest three months after the notice. If you have rented for more than three months, the notice must be in writing. More about the rest of the move in the guide to move-out inspection.

Where should I be registered as a student?
If you move to another town to study at university or college, you should as a rule be registered in the population register on that town, and you make a flyttanmälan to Skatteverket. This also applies to a student room. More about the rules in the guide on population registration and c/o.
