Electricity agreement when you move: electricity network, electricity trade and electricity meter

When moving, you handle two agreements. The electricity network agreement is signed with the network company that owns the network where you are moving in, and you cannot choose this. In Gothenburg, it is Göteborg Energi, and there the network agreement is cancelled and a new one is signed even when you move within the city. You choose your electricity supplier freely and notify them that you are moving. Göteborg Energi will not receive your new address from Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency), so you must contact them yourself.

What is the difference between an electricity network agreement and an electricity trade agreement?

The electricity grid is the cables up to your home, and it is run as a natural monopoly: you cannot choose your grid company. You buy the electricity itself from an electricity supply company, and there you can choose any one in Sweden, with a few exceptions, wherever you live.

How do I sign an electricity agreement for a new apartment?

First, the electricity network agreement, with the electricity network company that owns the network where the home is located. You cannot choose another one. Then, the electricity trade agreement, with any electricity trade company you want. Only the person who is listed on the electricity network agreement can sign an electricity trade agreement for the home, so the same person must be listed on both. If you do not choose an electricity supplier, you will be assigned one. The assigned price is often higher than if you had chosen one yourself, but an assigned agreement may not have a notice period longer than 14 days, so you can switch quickly.

Changing your electricity supplier should not cost anything. If you have a time-limited agreement, you may have to pay a cancellation fee if you cancel it prematurely, but it must not be greater than the direct loss caused by the cancellation. If you sign an agreement at a distance, you have a 14-day right of withdrawal, and when an agreement has been cancelled, you will receive the final invoice within six weeks.

Variable or fixed electricity agreement?

With a fixed price, you pay the same price per kilowatt hour throughout the contract period. A variable price, or monthly price, is a volume-weighted average of the spot price for the previous month plus the electricity supplier's surcharge, and such a contract must not have a longer binding or notice period than three months. With an hourly or quarterly price, the price follows the spot price, which is determined at 13:00 for the next day, so you can see when electricity is most expensive. A mixed price combines the forms. Energimarknadsinspektionen does not indicate which form is best: it depends on how much you can move your electricity usage.

What is the electricity meter, HAN-port, and P1-port?

The electricity meter is managed by the electricity grid company, which is responsible for measuring how much electricity you use. You do not choose the meter yourself. Since 1 October 2025, electricity meters in Sweden must meet seven functional requirements. They must measure consumption and input in each phase, record energy per quarter and have a customer interface with an open standard where you can read your meter values in near real-time. It is the port that is searched as a HAN or P1 port. At Vattenfall Eldistribution, it is called a P1 port (RJ12), and you activate it on Mina sidor before connecting equipment. Other grid companies have their own routines, so ask yours.

You have the right to have your electricity usage measured per quarter without extra cost. If you think the meter is incorrect, you can request that it be tested. If it is incorrect, the grid company pays for the test, if it is correct, you pay. When you move, write down the meter reading on the moving-in and moving-out days (our advice).

Who owns the electricity grid in Gothenburg?

Göteborg Energi, through its subsidiary Göteborg Energi Nät AB. You cannot choose another grid company. Göteborg Energi only has grid in the Gothenburg area, so if you move outside it, contact the local grid owner where you are moving in.

Do I have to cancel my electricity when I move?

Yes, the grid contract. Energimarknadsinspektionen says you should cancel it with the grid company no later than a month before you move out unless otherwise agreed. The supply contract does not end automatically, according to Hallå konsument. You tell your electricity supplier that you are moving, and some contracts can be ended while others follow you to the new address.

What happens if I do not choose an electricity supplier?

If you do not choose an electricity supplier, the grid company chooses one for you, a so-called default contract. The notice period for a default contract may be at most 14 days. From 1 July 2027 default contracts are being abolished, according to Energimarknadsinspektionen (news of 25 June 2026). You will then have to sign an electricity contract yourself to get electricity, for example when you move into a new apartment.

If I move within Gothenburg, can the contract follow me?

Not the grid contract. Göteborg Energi says you cannot take the grid contract with you between addresses, but end it and sign a new one for the address you are moving to. It recommends that you report the move no later than a week before you move in. The supply contract can in some cases follow you, so ask your electricity supplier.

Where can I compare electricity contracts?

We do not recommend any electricity companies. You compare electricity contracts with a comparison service, and we have checked these three. Our favourite comes first, the others in alphabetical order. Nobody pays to be listed. How each one makes its own money is stated in its box.

Common questions

I'm moving, what do I do with the electricity contract?

Cancel the grid contract with the grid company at the latest one month before moving out, unless otherwise agreed, and sign a new grid contract for the new home. Inform the electricity supplier that you are moving. The electricity supply contract does not end automatically, and some contracts may follow you to the new address.

We're moving in together, who should be on the electricity contract?

The same person should be on the grid contract and the electricity supply contract, since only the person on the grid contract can sign an electricity supply contract for the home.
