How much does it cost to rent a container?
The price usually consists of delivery and collection, waste (per ton or in a fixed package) and rental per day after a few days. Two examples from Gothenburg:
- The municipal container for bulky waste, ordered from Kretslopp och vatten: delivery and emptying 3,038 kronor, bulky waste 4,250 kronor per ton and rental 44 kronor per day after four days, all including tax according to the waste tax 2026.
- Renova's container package: 5 cubic metres from 3,197 kronor, 10 cubic metres from 3,632 kronor and 20 cubic metres from 4,543 kronor, excluding tax, for up to seven days with delivery, collection and treatment of the waste (5 October 2026).
If you live in a house or row house, you can share a container with your neighbours, according to Gothenburg. If you only have a little waste, it is usually cheaper to take sorted bulky waste to the recycling centre yourself.

Container or building bag?
You buy a building bag at a hardware store, fill it and have it collected with a crane truck. BIG BAG has price ranges for the bag from 595 to 1,395 kronor excluding tax in Stockholm and Uppsala, and collection costs extra depending on quantity, waste and location. In Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö and surrounding areas, the bags are usually collected on the first weekday after ordering, and in smaller towns within three to five working days. A container holds more but needs a free area in front of it for the truck: Gothenburg requires 15 metres.

What sizes are available?
The council's containers in Gothenburg come in sizes from about 5 to 34 cubic metres, open or covered and lockable. An open container of 10 cubic metres is approximately 3.60 metres long, 1.90 metres wide and 1.80 metres high. Containers up to 10 cubic metres can usually be emptied on site, the larger ones are driven away for emptying.

What can I throw away in the container?
The council's container in Gothenburg is for bulky waste, such as broken furniture, old bicycles, large toys and small amounts of garden waste. Electronics, hazardous waste, plaster, appliances and construction and demolition waste must not be put in, and incorrect waste results in an extra fee. Electronics can be put in an e-fence that you order at the same time without extra cost. In a building bag from BIG BAG, hazardous waste must not be mixed with other waste, and liquid waste and food waste must not be put in.

Do I need a permit to place the container on the street?
A street, a square or a parking lot that is a public place within a detailed plan area may not be used for anything other than its intended purpose without the Police's permission. This does not apply if the place is used only temporarily and to a negligible extent. The Police will ask the municipality before granting permission, and the processing costs 990 kronor even if the application is rejected. If you apply through the e-service, do so in good time. If the container is placed on its own plot or on the property's land, the landowner's yes is enough.

Renting a container in seven steps
-
Step 1: Estimate the quantity. If you only have a few pieces of furniture, it is usually cheaper to drive yourself to the recycling centre, or to book a collection of bulky waste.
-
Step 2: Choose a container or building bag. A container is placed with a lorry and requires space for the vehicle; a building bag is collected with a crane lorry.
-
Step 3: Determine where it will be placed. On your own plot or the property's land, the landowner's yes is enough. On a street, square or parking lot within a detailed plan, a permit from the Police is required.

-
Step 4: Ask the landlord what can be thrown away and what incorrectly sorted waste costs. Electronics, appliances and hazardous waste should usually not be put in a container for bulky waste.
-
Step 5: Order with date for delivery and collection, and ask what each extra day costs.
-
Step 6: Do not place the container near windows, balconies or air intakes, and make sure children cannot crawl into it.
-
Step 7: Sort out what can be sold or donated before you start filling. our advice
