This applies in Stockholm

Bostadsförmedlingen in Stockholm, the city's company, charges 200 kronor a year for a place in the housing queue. The average wait for an ordinary rental apartment was 9.0 years in 2025, and 21 years in the inner city. Resident parking requires you to be registered in the area, and when you move you change area in the city's e-service. A skip on the street requires a police permit, and the permit must be issued before you put it out.

This applies in Gothenburg

Gothenburg's recycling centres are free if you are registered in the city or have a waste subscription there, and you show your driving licence or recycling centre card at the barrier. Using the street or other public space within an area covered by a detailed development plan requires a police permit, and no official page says how long a removal van may stand while loading. You apply for a rental apartment at Boplats for 200 kronor a year, and landlords generally require three months' notice.

This applies in Malmö

Sysav runs Malmö's two staffed recycling centres, in Bunkeflo and Norra Hamnen, and every adult private individual gets 26 free visits per calendar year. Residential parking ends if you move to a different area. Rental apartments are let through Boplats Syd, which costs 300 kronor a year and had a median queue time of 2.1 years in 2025. MKB, the city's housing company with nearly 27,000 apartments, has a notice period of three full calendar months.

This applies in Uppsala

Uppsala Bostadsförmedling, a municipal company, charges 305 kronor a year for a place in the housing queue and 800 kronor when you are offered a home. At Uppsalahem the notice period is normally three calendar months, and the inspection is booked within eight days of the notice being registered. A skip on the street requires a police permit, and residents' parking exists only in some areas of central Uppsala.

This applies in Linköping

Tekniska verken runs the municipality's three recycling centres, and private individuals leave waste for free. Loading and unloading at the vehicle is allowed despite a parking ban, but a container on the street requires a permit from Polismyndigheten. Stångåstaden, the municipality's housing company, has 14,000 apartments and its own housing queue. There the notice period is three calendar months and the keys must be handed in by 12 noon on the first working day after the contract ends.

This applies in Västerås

VafabMiljö runs six recycling centres in the municipality, and bulky waste is free for private individuals. The removal van can stand on a pavement or cycle path for loading and unloading if you apply to Västerås stad for a temporary parking permit. The housing queue is run by Mimer, where you get one queue point per day. Mimer's notice period is three calendar months, and the keys must be handed in by 12:00 the day after the contract ends.

This applies in Örebro

Örebro municipality has five recycling centres where households drop off sorted waste for free. The removal van may stop for loading where parking is prohibited, but on a pedestrian or cycle path a permit from the municipality is required, and a skip on municipal land requires a permit from Polismyndigheten. The municipality has no housing queue of its own. The largest landlord, ÖBO, has a three-month notice period and an inspection within five working days.

This applies in Helsingborg

NSR runs the recycling centre at Välavägen 222. A removal van or container that stands outside your own property needs a temporary permit from the police, and the city charges rent for the land. There is no municipal housing agency in Helsingborg. Helsingborgshem, with about 12,000 flats, has its own queue with queue points from age 16. We did not find a page about resident parking when moving.

This applies in Jönköping

The sortergårdar in Jönköping municipality are run by June Avfall & Miljö, and bulky waste is free for everyone who lives in Jönköping, Habo and Mullsjö. A removal van or container on public land requires a permit from the police, who charge 990 kr. The municipality has no shared housing agency, so you queue with each landlord. Vätterhem has a three-month notice period and always inspects when you leave.

This applies in Norrköping

Nodra runs Norrköping's five returpunkter, which are the municipality's recycling centres, and people in Norrköping drop off sorted bulky waste there. A removal van that takes up an insignificant amount of public space for at most two hours normally needs no permit, but a container always does. The residential parking permit ends when you move from the address. Hyresbostäder books the inspection within three working days after notice.

Umeå has no municipal housing agency. Bostaden, the public housing company with about 15,000 apartments, has its own queue where queue points decide, and the notice period there is three months. Vakin runs seven recycling centres, the largest at Gimonäs and Klockarbäcken. A removal van may stand in a no-parking zone while you load, but a skip on the street requires a permit from the Police.

This applies in Lund

Lund has no municipal housing agency. The municipality's housing company LKF has its own queue, which is free, and you get one point per day. At LKF, the notice period is three months, and the apartment should be emptied and cleaned before 12 o'clock on the last day. The municipality has four recycling centres, where your driving licence is your access card. At Gunnesbo and Gastelyckan, 26 visits per year are included.

Borås has no municipal housing agency, so you sign up with each landlord. At Bostäder i Borås, the municipal company, the notice period is three calendar months, and the keys are handed over before 11 am on the last day. Borås Energi and Miljö operate five recycling centers, where your driver's license is your access card, and you can leave a maximum of 3 cubic meters per visit.

This applies in Eskilstuna

Eskilstuna has no municipal housing agency. At the municipal company Kfast, the housing queue is free, you get one point per day and must log in at least every twelfth month. The notice period is three months. Eskilstuna Energi and Miljö operate two recycling centres, Lilla Nyby and ReTuna. If the moving truck is to be parked where parking is prohibited, you can apply for a temporary parking permit from the municipality for up to two days.

This applies in Halmstad

Halmstad municipality has no official housing agency, so you search for housing directly with landlords and estate agents. The queue at the municipal housing company HFAB is free from 16 years old, and the notice period there is three months. The recycling centres are run by the municipality's company HEM, which has four facilities. You have 15 free visits per year and enter by scanning your driving licence.

The recycling centres in Gothenburg are run by Gästrike Återvinnare, and as a private individual, you pay no extra when visiting. The Gothenburg recycling centre on Utmarksvägen 16 is open every day of the week. Gavlegårdarna, the municipal housing company, has a queue where you get one point per day, and the notice period is three calendar months. Resident parking in central Gothenburg costs from 400 kronor per month since 1 October 2026.

This applies in Sundsvall

Sundsvall has no municipal housing agency. Mitthem, the municipality's housing company and largest landlord with over 5,700 apartments, has its own queue where you get one point per day, and the notice period is three months. MSVA operates three recycling centres: Kretsloppsparken, Johannedal and Svartvik. A container on the street for a maximum of half a day requires a permit from the municipality, longer time a permit from the Police.

Karlstad has no municipal housing agency. KBAB, the municipal housing company with approximately 7,700 apartments, has its own queue with queue points, and the notice period is normally three months. Karlstads Energi operates seven recycling centers, including Heden and Våxnäs. If something is to be placed on the municipality's land, such as a container, you need a police permit and should apply four weeks in advance.

This applies in Växjö

In Växjö, you sign up for the municipality's housing queue Boplats Växjö, which costs 125 kr per year from the year you turn 20. At Vidingehem, the municipal housing company, the notice period is three whole calendar months, and the final inspection is booked no later than four weeks before moving out. The recycling centres are run by SSAM, and Norremarks kretsloppspark on Deltavägen 22 is open every day.

This applies in Kalmar

Kalmarhem, which is owned by the municipality, is the largest landlord with approximately 5,250 rental apartments. The notice period is three months from the nearest month change, and the keys are handed over at Larmtorget 3 no later than 12:00 on the first weekday after the agreement has expired. Kretslopp Sydost operates the recycling centres. The main facility Flygstaden is open every day, and bulky waste from households is included in the fee.

This applies in Karlskrona

In Karlskrona, Affärsverken operates ten manned recycling centres, and the largest, Mältan, is open every day. The municipality does not close parking spaces during moves, but you can load and unload on the street as long as someone is active by the car every tenth minute. Karlskronahem, the municipality's housing company, has its own housing queue where you get one point per day, and the notice period is three months.

This applies in Gotland

Region Gotland is a single municipality, and all households leave waste free of charge at the region's seven recycling centres. The moving load goes with Destination Gotland's ferry from Nynäshamn or Oskarshamn to Visby, and heavy lorry or light lorry over 9 metres is booked as freight. At Gotlandshem, the region's housing company, the notice period is three months from the next month change. Resident parking is only available inside the city wall in Visby.

This applies in Falun

Kopparstaden is Falun municipality's housing agency. There you get one queue point per day and keep the points by logging in once a year. The notice period is three months from the next month change, and the keys are handed over to the landlord at the approved final inspection. Falu Energi & Vatten operates three recycling centres, in Falun, Bjursås and Svärdsjö, where you can drive a car with a trailer up to 3.5 tonnes.

This applies in Nyköping

In Nyköping, the housing queue at the municipal company Nyköpingshem is free, and the notice period there is three months from the nearest month change. The move-out cleaning should be completed by 12 o'clock on the day the agreement ends. The municipality runs the recycling centres itself, and the largest, Björshult, is also open on Saturdays and Sundays. As a private person, you pay no fee there, but the waste must be left loose and not in bags.

- Notice must be in writing if you have rented for longer than three months. Oral notice is only enough if the landlord gives you a written acknowledgement (12 kap. 8 § jordabalken).
- Send it as a registered letter to the landlord's usual address. Notice is then deemed given when the letter was handed in for postal delivery (12 kap. 8 § fourth paragraph jordabalken). Keep the receipt.
- If you hand the letter in person or use the landlord's e-service or email: keep the landlord's written confirmation. It shows that the notice has arrived (our advice).
- If you rent from a private individual (sublet or private letting): the Private Letting Act (2026:772) applies to agreements from 1 July 2026. Under it, it is enough to send the notice to an email address the landlord has given for messages about the agreement (6 kap. 8 §).
- If two of you are on the contract: both sign (our advice).

If you are moving to Gothenburg, the city accepts applications six months before the move at the earliest. If you are moving within Gothenburg, your child can keep their place.
