Move within the Nordic countries

If you are moving to another Nordic country and will live there for at least six months, you report the move in that country, not to Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency). Skatteverket will remove you from the population registration the day you are registered in the new country. If you are going to be away for more than a year, you also report the move to Skatteverket, on a form.

How does population registration work between the Nordic countries?

Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden have a common agreement on population registration. The person moving between countries reports the move to the registration authority in the country they are moving to, within the time that applies there, and the countries then exchange the information. For you who are moving from Sweden, this means that you report the move in the new country if you are going to live there for six months or more, and that Skatteverket registers you as moved out the day you are registered there.

If you are going to be away for more than a year, you also submit a flyttanmälan (notification of change of address) to Skatteverket, on form SKV 7665. The e-service cannot be used when moving within the Nordic countries.

Move to Denmark

Report your move to your new home municipality, to the citizens' services, no later than five days after you have moved to Denmark. Then you will receive a CPR number, the Danish personal number. As a Nordic citizen, you have the right to register with the population if you are going to live in Denmark for more than three months, and you are required to do so if you are going to live there for more than six months. Denmark is a member of the EU, so your removal goods do not require customs clearance.

Move to Finland

If you come from another Nordic country, you visit the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV) in person and register as soon as possible, no later than one month after the move. If you move to Finland for more than a year, you will receive a Finnish personal identity code and a home municipality. The rules also apply to Åland.

Move to Åland

On Åland, the State Department of Åland flyttanmälan handles population registration and personal identity codes. You visit them in person with a valid ID. The right of domicile on Åland does not prevent you from moving there, and you can buy a home with a permit to acquire land.

Åland is outside the EU's tax area. Therefore, the same rules apply to your removal goods as when you move to a country outside the EU, and they must be exported. More about this in the guide to removal goods and customs.

Move to Iceland

If you are going to live in Iceland for at least six months, you must register with the population. Report your move within a week by visiting Þjóðskrá or the municipal office where you have moved. You will receive a kennitala, the Icelandic identity number, which you will keep for life. Iceland is not a member of the EU, so your removal goods must be exported.

Move to Norway

Notification, ID check at the tax office, tax and car are in the guide to move to Norway from Sweden. Norway is not a member of the EU, so your removal goods must be exported when leaving Sweden.

Move to Sweden from a Nordic country

As a citizen of another Nordic country, you do not need a residence permit to be registered in Sweden. If you are going to live here for at least one year, you register your move in Skatteverket's e-service Move to Sweden and visit a service office in person with a passport or national ID card. How the visit goes is described in the guide to moving to Sweden.

Common questions

Must I notify Skatteverket when I move to a Nordic country?

Only if you will be away for more than a year. Otherwise, a report in the country you are moving to is sufficient, and Skatteverket will register you as moved out the day you become registered in the new country.

Is there a Nordic moving certificate?

You do not need a certificate from Skatteverket. According to the Nordic agreement, you report the move in the country you are moving to, and the countries exchange the information between them.

Is Åland considered Finland when I move?

For population registration, yes: the rules for Finland also apply to Åland, but the State Office on Åland handles the report. For tax purposes, Åland is outside the EU’s tax area, so the moving goods are handled as when moving to a country outside the EU.

Do I need a residence permit to live in another Nordic country?

No. As a Nordic citizen, you do not need a residence permit to be registered in Sweden, and in Norway you can live and work without a residence permit. In Denmark, you have the right to register if you are going to live there for more than three months, according to Info Norden.
