Rent a moving truck in seven steps
-
Step 1: Calculate how much needs to be moved, with the moving list and the box counter.
-
Step 2: Choose a car with a total weight of up to 3,500 kilos if you have a B licence. If you are going to tow a trailer, check your licence.
-
Step 3: Compare the price for the entire move: basic rent, kilometres beyond what is included, fuel and excess reduction. our advice
-
Step 4: Read the rental agreement and the terms for excess, fuel and extra drivers before you book.
-
Step 5: Check the street at both addresses: where the car can stand while you load, and if you need a permit. our advice
-
Step 6: Walk around the car when you pick it up, make sure the damage is stated in the protocol and photograph it.
-
Step 7: Return the car with a receipt or written confirmation of its condition, and photograph it if you return it outside opening hours.
Which driving licence do I need?
A B licence is sufficient for cars and light vans with a total weight of up to 3,500 kilos. The total weight is the highest weight the car is designed for, i.e. the car plus maximum load, and that is what determines it, not how much you load. A truck up to 7,500 kilos requires a C1 licence. If you are going to tow a trailer behind the car, the trailer's and car's total weights apply together, and then a B96 or BE licence may be required.
The total weight is stated in the registration certificate, and you can search for vehicle information by registration number in the Transport Agency's e-service. The maximum permitted trailer weight is also stated in the registration certificate.

The licence check: can you tow the trailer?
The gross weight is in the registration certificate for the car and the trailer. The rental company can give you the trailer's gross weight.
Enter both weights.
You may drive. The trailer weighs at most 750 kilograms, or the car and trailer stay within the limit for your licence.
You need B96 or BE. The car and trailer weigh more than 3,500 kilograms together but at most 4,250 kilograms.
You need BE. The car and trailer weigh more than 4,250 kilograms together.
BE covers heavier trailers. Check the trailer's weight against Transportstyrelsen's rules for BE before you rent.
Transportstyrelsen: with a B licence you may tow a light trailer of at most 750 kilograms gross weight, or a heavier one if the car and trailer together weigh at most 3,500 kilograms. With B96 they may weigh at most 4,250 kilograms. You drive a van of at most 3,500 kilograms with B.
Insurance and excess
No law governs what a car rental agreement should contain, so the agreement applies. If the car is damaged, the lessor's insurance applies, but you may have to pay the lessor's excess. The lessor may not have terms that automatically make you responsible for damage or theft: if you can show that the damage is due to an accident or vandalism, you do not have to pay, according to Konsumentverket. Usually, only the person listed as the driver is covered, so add the person who will drive.
Excess reduction lowers what you pay in case of damage and is often included when you rent in Sweden. Excess elimination removes the excess entirely but is more expensive, often with a fee per day. Check first if your credit card, home insurance or car insurance already covers the rental car.

Pick up and return: damage, fuel and fees
Go through the vehicle before you sign the agreement, preferably with the staff, and make sure the damage is noted in a protocol that you get a copy of. Photograph scratches and scrapes. If something happens during the rental, you should contact the rental company as soon as possible and the police, even in case of minor damage, and save copies of the reports. When you return the vehicle, ask for a receipt or written confirmation of its condition.
If it is stated in the terms, the rental company can charge extra afterwards, for example if the vehicle is not full or is dirty, and for fines, road and parking fees that are first sent to the rental company. The rental company may not withdraw money from your card for damage before you have had the opportunity to dispute the claim.

What does it cost? Calculate per kilometre
The price of a moving vehicle usually consists of several parts, and the daily price is just one of them. Calculate like this to compare rental companies for the same move:
- The basic rental fee for the time you need the vehicle, hours or days.
- Plus the kilometres beyond those included, times the price per kilometre. Count all the trips between the addresses and the journey to and from the landlord.
- Plus fuel, if the vehicle should be returned full.
- Plus excess reduction or other extras you choose.
Divide the total by the number of kilometres you drive, and you will see what the move costs per kilometre with each rental company. If the move is going to be long, a rental company with a higher daily price but more free kilometres may be cheaper. If you want to leave the vehicle in a different location, read about one-way rental. What the entire move costs with or without a removal company you calculate in the moving cost calculator.
Where can the moving vehicle be placed when loading?
Placing the vehicle to load or unload goods is not considered parking in traffic rules, but as stopping. Where there is only a parking ban, the vehicle can stand while you load, but not where stopping is prohibited. On the pavement and cycle path, the vehicle cannot stand at all. If the vehicle needs to stand where it is otherwise not allowed, the municipality can grant an exemption. Gothenburg City mentions moving as an example of special reasons and charges 500 kr per exemption.

Moving van or removal company?
If you rent a van, you do the work yourself and get no RUT tax deduction. If you hire a removal company, the work is eligible for a RUT tax deduction, but not the van or fuel. The decision guide for a trailer or removal company can be found on the page about renting a trailer one way, and how to compare quotes is under booking a removal company.

Common questions
Can I drive a moving van with a regular B driver's license?
Yes, if the vehicle's total weight is up to 3,500 kg. This applies to both passenger cars and light trucks, such as most vans. A truck up to 7,500 kg requires a C1 license.
Where do I find the vehicle's total weight?
In the registration certificate, or in the Transport Agency's e-service for vehicle information where you search by registration number. The lessor can also provide it.
What is self-risk reduction?
An addition that reduces what you pay if the car is damaged. Self-risk elimination removes the self-risk completely but is a more expensive addition, often per day. Konsumentverket advises you to check if your credit card, home insurance or car insurance already covers the rental car.
Do I get the RUT tax deduction for the removal van?
No. The RUT tax deduction applies to work performed by a company. Renting a moving truck and fuel does not provide any deduction.
Can I cancel the booking?
There is no right of withdrawal in the law when you rent a car, according to Konsumentverket. The cancellation terms are stated in the agreement.
