What must the removal company know about the piano?
According to Bohag 2010, you should provide the information you understand or should understand is important for the move. This includes particularly heavy, bulky or large items like pianos, large cupboards and billiard tables, as well as accessibility and whether there is a lift that can handle the load at both ends. If you do not provide the information, you may have to pay for damage to your belongings yourself.

Is a grand piano included in the moving assignment?
Not if you have not agreed on it. Bohag 2010 excludes motor beds, grand pianos, billiard tables and other abnormally heavy or bulky items from the assignment, unless otherwise agreed. Write the grand piano in the quote request and make sure it is in the booking.

What does it cost to move a piano?
There is no fixed price to go by. The price depends on the carrying route, stairs, distance and whether the piano is moved alone or with the rest of the household goods, so ask for a quote from several companies. The work gives RUT tax deduction: Skatteverket counts moving a piano and other heavy items in the household goods as RUT work. The deduction is 50 percent of the labour cost and is deducted directly from the invoice. The removal van and fuel give no deduction.

- If you have made an inventory, the company should check it when the assignment begins and when it is completed. If you have packed yourself, the check only applies to what is visible (Bohag 2010 point 3).
- Money, securities, jewellery, flammable substances, living animals and plants are not included in the assignment unless you have agreed on it (Bohag 2010 point 2). Write them down under what you drive yourself (our advice).

Who pays if the piano is damaged?
The removal company is responsible according to Bohag 2010 for the entire assignment and must compensate for damage to the household goods, if it does not show that the damage is due to something outside its control that it could not reasonably have anticipated. The compensation is limited to 20 price base amounts per household and does not apply to sentimental value. An item that can be assumed to be worth more than half a price base amount is considered particularly valuable; write down the piano in an inventory with the market value. If you discover damage, you should complain to the company within a reasonable time, and preferably take photos.

How you complain and when you can go to ARN (the National Board for Consumer Disputes) is stated in the guide on damage and complaint.
Does the piano need tuning after the move?
Expect that. Our advice is to let the piano stand in the new room for a while before you book tuning, so that it can get used to the temperature and humidity there. Tuning is not included in the removal assignment.

Common questions
Do I get a RUT tax deduction for the piano move?
Yes. Skatteverket lists moving a piano or other heavy items in the household as RUT work. The deduction is 50 percent of the labour cost, and the company deducts it directly on the invoice.
Do all removal companies move a grand piano?
No, not automatically. According to Bohag 2010, the assignment does not include grand pianos, billiard tables or other abnormally heavy or bulky items unless you have agreed on it.
What happens if the removal company damages the piano?
The removal company replaces damage to the household goods if it cannot show that the damage is due to something outside its control that it could not reasonably have expected. If you have not told them about the piano, you may have to pay for the damage yourself, according to Bohag 2010. Complain in writing and save photos.
Can I move the piano myself?
It is possible, but you get no RUT tax deduction for what you do yourself, and if you damage the piano, the staircase or yourself, you are responsible for it. Our advice is to hire a removal company that has moved pianos before.

An agreement between the removal industry and Konsumentverket. Members of Sveriges Åkeriföretag and Sveriges Möbeltransportörers Förbund must follow it, and Konsumentverket regards it as good practice for the whole industry. Among other things it gives the right to cancel free of charge up to 15 days before the move.
