Your checklist for the move abroad
Enter the day you travel and tick what applies to you. The list is for anyone who is going to live abroad for a year or more.
- At the latest one week before you leave: notify Skatteverket of the move out, in the e-service or on form SKV 7665.
- Before you leave: read Skatteverket's rules for moving to another Nordic country. Special rules apply there and the e-service cannot be used.
- The same day: the notification for children under 18 is signed by all guardians. Children who have turned 16 may notify on their own.
- Before you leave: notify Försäkringskassan of the move on Mina sidor or with form 5459, so that they can assess whether you are still insured.
- Before you leave: tell CSN your address abroad. The notification to Skatteverket is not enough for CSN.
- At the latest three months before, to the end of a month: give notice on the rental apartment, unless you are going to sublet it with the landlord's consent.
- Before you leave: notify associations, newspapers and banks that do not pick up your address via Skatteverket.
- After the move: find out whether you must file a tax return in Sweden. You may need to even when you do not live here.
Notification at the latest one week before you leave, 27 § folkbokföringslagen (the Swedish Population Registration Act). Notice of three months to the end of a month, 12 kap. 4 § jordabalken (the Swedish Land Code). The list is a guide.
Are you moving to Spain, Norway or the USA?
The country you are moving to has its own rules for registration, visa and healthcare. We have compiled them for the countries most people ask about: moving to Spain, moving to Norway and moving to the USA.
If you are moving back instead, read the guide on moving back home to Sweden.

Emigrating: what applies to the move-out for Skatteverket?
Yes, if you can be expected to sleep abroad regularly for at least one year. Emigrating or moving abroad is called moving out in the population registration, and you should then be deregistered as moved out. The notification must be received no later than one week before departure. If you are abroad for a shorter period than a year, the population registration is not affected. If a shorter stay is extended to one year or more, the same rule applies.

What must the notification contain?
Under folkbokföringslagen, the notification of moving out must contain:
- name and personal identity number
- the address in Sweden
- the day you leave
- address and type of home abroad
- what you will do there and how long you expect to stay
- employer abroad, if you have one
- a home that you still own or rent in Sweden
The e-service requires, among other things, that you are over 18, are moving to a country outside the Nordic countries and are registered as unmarried, divorced or widowed. Otherwise you use form SKV 7665.

Move within the Nordic countries: what applies?
If you will be living for at least six months in another Nordic country, you register your move in that country, and Skatteverket deregisters you the day you become population registered there. If you are away for more than a year, you also register your move with Skatteverket, on a form, since the e-service cannot be used. Deadlines and authorities for Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Åland are listed in the guide to moving within the Nordic countries, and Norway in the guide to moving to Norway from Sweden.

Move to another EU country: registration and right of residence
Within the EU, you can live in another country, but if you stay longer than three months as an employee, you should register with the local authorities. Then you need a valid passport or national ID card and an employment certificate or proof from your employer, and if you are self-employed, proof of this. You will receive a certificate confirming your right of residence in the country. Some EU countries also require you to report your arrival within a reasonable time, and those who do not may be fined. The authorities of the country decide which forms and deadlines apply, so check them before you travel. For Spain, they are stated in the guide to moving to Spain. You report your move from Sweden to Skatteverket as above, also for children (see below).

From which day do I count as emigrated?
If you move to a country outside the Nordic countries, Skatteverket registers you as emigrated from the day you move, provided the notification has arrived by that day at the latest. Otherwise you count as emigrated from the day Skatteverket receives the notification.

Who gets to know where you live abroad?
Skatteverket registers your address abroad, and authorities and companies that fetch addresses from SPAR get it from there. SPAR deletes the information about you five years after the move. Associations, newspapers and banks that do not fetch the address you notify yourself, using the template below. A special postal address applies only when you are abroad for less than a year.

Moving abroad with children
The notification for a child under 18 must be signed by all guardians. A child who has turned 16 may notify the move on their own.

Försäkringskassan, CSN and your pension
You must notify Försäkringskassan when you move to another country, so that they can assess whether you are still insured in Sweden. You do that on Mina sidor or with form 5459, and family members over 18 who move with you give their own details. If you have a student loan, you notify both Skatteverket and CSN. We have not gone through Pensionsmyndigheten's rules for moving abroad; ask them directly.

Household goods and customs
Within the EU, you pay no fees to Tullverket (Swedish Customs) for your removal goods. If you move to a country outside the EU, including Norway and Åland, your removal goods must be declared for export, by you yourself at a customs office or by the removal company. What applies, and how you can move your goods back in duty-free, is stated in the guide to removal goods and customs.

Template for the new address
For associations, banks and newspapers that do not get the address from Skatteverket. All the templates are under templates for the move.
Email: New address abroad To: Association, bank, insurance company or newspaper that does not pick up the address from Skatteverket
The template is in Swedish because it goes to a Swedish recipient.
- Authorities and companies that retrieve data from SPAR get the address via Skatteverket. You notify associations and newspapers yourself (Skatteverket).
- SPAR deletes the record five years after the move unless you request deferred deletion.
Common questions
Do I keep my personal identity number if I move abroad?
Yes. Your citizenship and personal identity number are not affected by being registered as emigrated, according to Skatteverket.
Do I have to file a tax return in Sweden after the move?
You may need it, even if you no longer live or stay in Sweden. If you have a significant connection here, you are unlimitedly tax liable. More in the guide to SINK and tax when moving abroad.
Can I keep a postal address in Sweden?
A special postal address applies only if you are abroad for less than a year. If you are going to live there longer, you notify a move.
