How many moving boxes do I need?
Guldhedens Flytt (checked 2 October 2026) writes: "Räkna med cirka 0,8 lådor per kvadratmeter, vilket innebär att en bostad på 100 kvadratmeter skulle kräva ungefär 80 lådor." That is one removal company's rule of thumb. We have not found any trade organisation that gives a number, or any source that counts per room.
Calculated using the rule of thumb 0.8 boxes per square meter from Guldhedens Flytt. If you have many books or a full storage room, you need more.

What size is a moving box?
There is no standard size. Clas Ohlson divides its moving crates into three sizes: small at about 40 litres, medium at about 69 litres and large at about 98 litres. IKEA has two sizes of DUNDERGUBBE. The measurements for the two, read on 5 October 2026, are:

Large or small moving boxes?
Both are needed. Clas Ohlson writes that books and porcelain are heavy in relation to their volume and should be distributed in smaller boxes, so that they can be carried. A large moving box is suitable for light things like clothes, bed linen and pillows. Distribute the weight over several boxes and fill the empty spaces with packing material, so that the contents do not move when the box is carried. The small box withstands a maximum of 20 kilos and medium and large a maximum of 30 kilos, according to Clas Ohlson.

Which moving box is suitable for glass and porcelain?
A small one. Glass and porcelain weigh a lot per litre, so a smaller moving box becomes a suitable weight. Wrap each item in tissue paper, packing paper or bubble wrap; bubble wrap provides extra shock absorption when the contents can hit against something, according to Clas Ohlson. Can I rent moving boxes or moving boxes in Gothenburg?
Yes. Two of the removal companies we recommend say themselves that they rent out boxes, and one delivers new ones. Our favourite comes first, the rest in alphabetical order.

Renting boxes in other cities
There is no box rental company that covers the whole country, so we report it city by city. Here are the removal companies on our city lists that say themselves that they rent or lend out boxes. In Uppsala, Malmö, Linköping, Norrköping, Helsingborg and Jönköping we have not found any such statement from the companies; ask the removal company when you request a quote.

Where can I buy cheap moving boxes?
These sell new moving boxes throughout the country. We have checked them, with price and date. The cheapest price per piece on 5 October 2026 was IKEA's smaller DUNDERGUBBE for 19 kr. For a large box, the price was roughly the same for the two: 29 kr for IKEA's 80-litre box and 29.98 kr per piece for Clas Ohlson's large in a five-pack. The cheapest option of all is to borrow: several removal companies in the table above lend boxes to their removal customers.

Do moving boxes qualify for the RUT tax deduction?
No. Skatteverket gives no RUT tax deduction for moving boxes, but the packing does qualify if the removal company does it. More in step 3 of the move: packing.

Should I rent or buy?
That is up to you. If you rent, you return the boxes afterwards, and at Västsvenska Flyttbyrån (checked 2 October 2026) they can be collected at your home or dropped off at the office. If you buy, you keep them. Guldhedens Flytt (checked 2 October 2026) offers both, with collection at the office or home delivery in the Gothenburg area. We do not recommend either option.
