Do I need my own home insurance?
Yes. Your parents' home insurance does not apply when you move from home, according to Konsumenternas, and it also applies when you move to a student room. Insurance companies often sell student home insurance at a discounted price. What a home insurance covers and how you compare is stated in the guide to home insurance.

What things do you need when moving away from home?
The Consumer Agency's example calculates 920 kronor per month for home equipment and 200 kronor for consumables when you live alone, compared to 390 and 140 kronor when you live at home. Most things you buy once, so start with what you use the first week:
- Bed, bed linen, towels and curtains or blackout curtains for the bedroom.
- Pot, frying pan, a few plates, glasses, cutlery, chopping board and knife.
- Dish soap, dishcloth, toilet paper, laundry detergent, trash bags and light bulbs.
- Vacuum cleaner or broom, bucket and mop.
- An extension cord, tools to assemble furniture and a fire extinguisher.
A complete moving kit is not needed. Much is available second-hand, and where you find it is in sell, donate or dispose of furniture.

Do I have to report a move if I am only studying in another town?
Yes, if you are moving to study at a university or college. It makes no difference whether you move in with a friend, into a student room or into your own apartment. If you attend compulsory school or upper secondary school and are under 18, you should instead be registered with your parents, at most until your 21st birthday.

How much student finance do I get?
From 1 January 2027, those with full study grants will receive 13,684 kr for four weeks of study, according to CSN. The button in the budget calculator fills in the amount. If you are under 29 years old and have a low income, you may also be entitled to housing benefit.

Electricity and broadband
If electricity and internet are not included in the rent, you take out your own contracts. The comparison services we have checked:
Move into a collective: who has the contract?
In a shared accommodation, several people share a home, and this determines the rules you have. Usually, one or a few people are on the rental contract, and the others rent a room from them. If you rent a room in someone else's home, you are a lodger. The tenant can take in a lodger as long as the landlord does not have reason to say no, for example, because it becomes too many or disturbs the neighbours. If the tenant sublets the entire apartment to you, subletting applies, and then the landlord's consent is required.
As a lodger in part of someone else's home, you have no protection against termination, so you cannot count on being able to stay if the contract holder terminates your agreement. Write an agreement about the rent, notice period, electricity and internet, and who cleans what (our advice). A template for the agreement can be found in the guide on lodger. You register with the population registration in the shared accommodation if you sleep there at least one night a week.

Where do I find cheap furniture?
Second-hand. The guide on selling, donating or throwing away furniture says where the furniture goes, and Kretsloppsparken Alelyckan in Gothenburg has three second-hand shops. More on that at second-hand in Gothenburg.
