How do I change my healthcare centre on 1177?
Log in to 1177.se with e-identification. Under the heading Healthcare centre, you can see where you are registered. Choose Change healthcare provider, search for the healthcare centre you want and confirm. You can also contact the healthcare centre, which will give you a form to fill in. This is how 1177 describes it for Västra Götaland; how you register varies between regions, so choose your region at the top of the page on 1177.se.

What happens to my healthcare centre when I move to another region?
You can be registered with one healthcare centre at a time, but it can be located anywhere in Sweden. If you have not chosen one yourself, you will be automatically registered with the healthcare centre closest to your population registration address in some regions. This applies, for example, in Västra Götaland. If you are still registered in the old region, you can still seek temporary care at another healthcare centre, for example, if you become ill during the move.

How many times can I change my healthcare centre?
You can change your healthcare centre up to two times in a year. The region can allow more changes if there are special reasons. The Västra Götalandsregionen considers it a special reason when you move there from another region or from abroad, when you move between municipalities within the region, and when you move to a municipal accommodation where another healthcare centre has medical responsibility. Moving means that your population registration address changes. The new healthcare centre will help you apply for an exception, and if it is granted, you have 14 days to choose.

Can I choose healthcare in another region?
Yes. Anyone covered by a region's responsibility for healthcare should be able to choose a provider of publicly funded open healthcare, within or outside their own region. The region cannot limit your choice of healthcare centre to a specific area within the region. For specialised open healthcare, you may sometimes need a referral. This is decided by the referral rules in the region where you are registered and in the region where you seek care.

How do I change dentists when I move?
You choose whether you want to go to public dental care or a private clinic, and you can change dentists or dental hygienists when you want, also in the middle of a treatment. If you change in the middle of a treatment, it may become more expensive: the new dentist may need to redo examinations, and a price proposal from one clinic does not apply to another.
The prices are free, so each clinic sets its own and must have the price list available. Public dental care clinics within a region have the same prices, but they can differ between regions. The clinic must be connected to Försäkringskassan (the Swedish Social Insurance Agency) for you to get state dental care support and high-cost protection.

What applies to children's dental care when moving?
The region must offer dental care to those living in the region. Public dental care is responsible for regular and complete dental care up to and including the year the child turns 19, and it is free of charge until then. If you move to another region, the new region is responsible after the move.

What happens to the prescriptions and the pharmacy when I move?
Nothing, for the most part. E-prescriptions are stored by the E-health Authority, and all pharmacies in Sweden can retrieve the prescription and dispense the medicine. Often you can go to any pharmacy, but certain unusual medicines require a specific pharmacy. A prescription is usually valid for one year, sometimes shorter, and prescriptions are stored in the National Medicines List for five years.
The high-cost protection also applies. All pharmacies use the same database, so the new pharmacy can see how much you have already paid. When you have paid 3,800 kronor during a period of twelve months, you do not need to pay more for prescription medication for the rest of the period (2026). One exception is contraceptive medication for you between 21 and 26 years, where the cost depends on the region you live in. Renew the prescriptions that will soon expire before you leave the old healthcare centre (our advice).

Does the journal follow when I change?
You can read parts of your journal by logging in to 1177.se, but how much you see varies between regions. If you want a printout, you should contact the clinic you visited first. You are usually entitled to a copy, but may need to pay for the copying. In private care, the journal should be issued as soon as possible unless secrecy prevents it.

Common questions
Does the health centre change automatically when I move?
Do not assume this. In some regions, you are automatically listed at the nearest healthcare centre if you have not chosen one yourself, according to 1177. Log in to 1177.se after the move and choose the healthcare centre you want.
Can I be listed at a healthcare centre in another region?
Yes. You can list yourself on a healthcare centre anywhere in Sweden, according to 1177. You can also choose open care outside your region according to 9 kap. 1 § patientlagen.
How many times can I change my healthcare centre?
At most twice a year, according to 7 chap. 3 b § of the Health and Medical Care Act. The region can grant more changes if there are special reasons, and the Västra Götalandsregionen region counts moving as such a reason.
Do I need to cancel my dentist?
No. According to 1177, you can change your dentist or dental hygienist whenever you want, even during ongoing treatment. You book an appointment with the new clinic.
Can I collect my prescriptions at a pharmacy in the new municipality?
Yes. E-prescriptions are stored by the E-health Authority, and all pharmacies in Sweden can dispense them. Certain unusual medicines are only available at a specific pharmacy. The high-cost protection follows, as all pharmacies use the same database.
Do you follow the journal to the new health center?
Not always. You can read parts of the medical record on 1177.se, but how much varies between regions. If the new clinic needs to see it, you can request a copy; it may cost something.
