Give notice on your home

As a tenant you can always give notice on a rental apartment so that the contract ends at the end of the month that comes nearest after three months. If you give notice on the apartment on 15 October, the contract therefore ends at the turn of the month from January to February. Count back from moving day and give notice first of all. Keep the landlord's confirmation of the notice.

How do I work out when the contract ends?

Add three months from the day you give notice and go forward to the next end of a month. The notice must be in writing if you have rented for longer than three months. The calculator, how to send the notice and the template are in the guide to notice periods for an apartment.

What do I do once the notice is sent?

Keep the landlord's confirmation and the date the contract ends. That date decides the rest of the move: when the removal company comes, when the move-out cleaning must be finished and when the keys are handed over. The next step is to book a removal company.

Does the same notice period apply to commercial premises?

No. For a premises, the notice period is nine months to the end of the month, unless otherwise agreed, according to 12 kap. 4 §. More about that in the guide on renting and terminating premises.

Letter: Notice of termination of tenancy agreement To: The landlord, or whoever receives the rent on the landlord's behalf

The template is in Swedish because it goes to a Swedish recipient.

  • Notice must be in writing if you have rented for longer than three months. Oral notice is only enough if the landlord gives you a written acknowledgement (12 kap. 8 § jordabalken (the Swedish Land Code)).
  • Send it as a registered letter to the landlord's usual address. Notice is then deemed given when the letter was handed in for postal delivery (12 kap. 8 § fourth paragraph jordabalken). Keep the receipt.
  • If you hand the letter in person or use the landlord's e-service or email: keep the landlord's written confirmation. It shows that the notice has arrived (our advice).
  • If you rent from a private individual (sublet or private letting): the Private Letting Act (2026:772) applies to agreements from 1 July 2026. Under it, it is enough to send the notice to an email address the landlord has given for messages about the agreement (6 kap. 8 §).
  • If two of you are on the contract: both sign (our advice).
  • Use the calculator in the guide Notice period for an apartment to work out the day the agreement ends.

  • The law gives no right to a shorter notice period. Count on the old date until you have a written answer.
  • Once the apartment is available to let, you must let it be shown at a reasonable time (12 kap. 26 § jordabalken).
