You do it yourself

Apply for a preschool place At least 120 days before the date you want a place, counted here from moving day, according to the City of Gothenburg. If you are moving to Gothenburg, you can apply 180 days before at the earliest.
Apply for a school place If you are moving to Gothenburg, the city accepts applications six months before the move at the earliest. If you are moving within Gothenburg, your child keeps their place.
Cancel the grid contract at the old address No later than a month before you move out unless otherwise agreed, according to Energimarknadsinspektionen.
Tell your electricity supplier that you are moving Some electricity contracts can be ended when you move, others follow you to the new address, according to Energimarknadsinspektionen. The timing is our advice.
Check the minimum term on your broadband The minimum term applies even if you move, according to Konsumentverket. The timing is our advice.
Check the moving cover in your home insurance The moving cover often applies to both addresses for 14 to 45 days, according to Konsumenternas. Check your own terms.
Make the flyttanmälan to Skatteverket Before the move or no later than a week after, according to Skatteverket. Free.
Order mail forwarding Before the move, so that your mail follows you from the first day. Prices retrieved 2 October 2026.
Sign a grid contract for the new address Göteborg Energi recommends that you report the move no later than a week before you move in. Outside Gothenburg, contact the local grid owner.
Cancel resident parking at the old address A permit that is not cancelled keeps costing money, according to the City of Gothenburg.
Apply for resident parking at the new address The application is not processed until the new population registration address applies, according to the City of Gothenburg, and it is registered on the move-in day at the earliest.
Report the change of owner for water, sewage and waste On the same day you hand over the house, according to Kretslopp och vatten. Until then you are liable to pay.
Give family and friends your new address You always have to tell private individuals yourself, according to Skatteverket.
Tell newspapers and magazines You may have to tell magazines yourself, according to Skatteverket.
Tell associations and your trade union You may have to tell associations and organisations yourself, according to Skatteverket.
End or move your membership of Hyresgästföreningen (the Swedish Union of Tenants) If you are a member of Hyresgästföreningen and want to end your membership, call the service centre on 0771-443 443 and choose 1, according to Hyresgästföreningen.
Tell your mobile operator Companies you want to be sure have your new address you tell yourself, according to Skatteverket.
Change health centre if you want to Moving to or within Västra Götaland counts as a special reason, in addition to the two changes per year, according to 1177. The timing is our advice.

- The same person should be named on the grid contract and the supply contract (Göteborg Energi; compare 9 kap. 1 § ellagen).
- If you do not choose an electricity supplier, you are today given a default contract with a notice period of at most 14 days (9 kap. 3 and 8 §§ ellagen). From 1 July 2027 default contracts are being abolished, according to Energimarknadsinspektionen.

Who gets my new address automatically?

Skatteverket says it passes the address on "till de flesta myndigheter och viktiga aktörer i samhället", and that you do not need to tell them yourself. They include Försäkringskassan, Migrationsverket, Lantmäteriet, Transportstyrelsen, CSN, Pensionsmyndigheten and Arbetsförmedlingen, plus municipalities and regions.

Who do I have to tell myself?

According to Skatteverket, you may need to tell associations and organisations you belong to, magazines you subscribe to and companies you want to be sure have your new address. You always have to tell private individuals yourself. The electricity grid is also on that list: Göteborg Energi does not get the address from Skatteverket.

How do I cancel my subscription when I move?

Mobile and broadband subscriptions follow the law on electronic communication. The contract period can be up to 24 months, and you pay for the whole period even if you move. The notice period can be up to one month, and if the contract has a contract period, you do not need to cancel it earlier than one month before the end of the contract period. For other subscriptions, such as alarms, newspapers and gym, the agreement applies. Cancel in writing and save the confirmation (our advice). Do I need to tell CSN and Försäkringskassan?

Usually not. CSN says it automatically gets the address when you report it to Skatteverket, and that this is usually enough, but that in some situations you need to tell CSN directly. Försäkringskassan refers to the flyttanmälan with Skatteverket.

How do I move my electricity?

You have two contracts. You cannot choose the electricity grid, and in Gothenburg the grid contract is cancelled and a new one signed even when you move within the city. You tell your electricity supplier that you are moving. The supply contract does not end automatically. The steps are in the guide to the electricity contract when moving.

Can I cancel my broadband when I move?

Yes, but if you have a minimum term you pay for all of it. Konsumentverket says you are obliged to pay for the whole minimum term, "även om du till exempel flyttar och tjänsten inte fungerar i ditt nya hem", and that the minimum term may be at most 24 months for consumer contracts. You are usually bound by a contract for a fibre connection even if you move, according to Hallå konsument.

In Göteborg Energi's city fibre network you choose a service provider from the communications operator linked to the address, Seths Open Network or iTUX. Not all addresses are connected to that network, so ask the landlord or the association which network the building has (our advice). More in the guide on moving your broadband.

Does home insurance apply during the move?

Often, but check your terms. Konsumenternas writes that home insurance often has move protection that can apply to both the old and new addresses for between 14 and 45 days, and that transport protection is included in some cases. Ask your insurance company what applies to you. If you hire a removal company, it should have liability insurance, more on that in step 5 in the move: moving day. Mobile, TV and streaming

The binding period for the mobile subscription applies even if you move. Konsumentverket writes that there is nothing in consumer legislation that gives you the right to terminate an agreement with a binding period without paying because you are moving. The company may not require you to cancel in a particular way, but in writing is safest.

There is no TV license to move. The radio and TV fee was abolished in 2019 and replaced by a public service fee, which is levied through taxes, up to 1,184 kronor per person and year 2026. Ask the new landlord or association if cable TV is included in the rent or fee (our advice).

Unemployment benefit, employer and municipal tax

Many unemployment funds retrieve your address from the state's person address register SPAR. Unionens and Byggnads unemployment funds state this explicitly. Check anyway on My pages with your unemployment fund that the address has been changed (our advice). You notify the employer yourself (our advice).

You pay municipal tax to the municipality where you were registered on 1 November the previous year. If you move to a municipality with a different tax rate in December, the old municipality's tax applies for the whole of the next year.

Gym, associations, subscriptions and library cards

Associations you are a member of and magazines you subscribe to will not receive your new address from Skatteverket. Inform them yourself, preferably using the template for a new address under templates for the move. Gym cards and other agreements are cancelled or moved according to the agreement terms. Ask the library in the new municipality if your loan card is valid there (our advice).

The car and guns

Transportstyrelsen gets your new address from Skatteverket, but you arrange resident parking, car insurance and charging box yourself. It is stated in the guide about the car when moving. Do I need to tell the bank?

Larger banks and insurance companies fetch your new address from the SPAR register, according to Skatteverket. Our advice is still to check with the bank that the address has been changed.
