Steps 1 and 7 are our advice. The other steps follow Skatteverket.
When should I make the flyttanmälan?
Before you move or within a week after. Skatteverket writes: "Gör din anmälan innan du ska flytta eller senast en vecka efter att du flyttat." Skatteverket does not state an earliest day on which you may submit the notification. What it says is that the new address is registered on the move-in day at the earliest.

Calculate the last day for flyttanmälan
You can report before the move. If you report later than a week after, the new address applies from the day the report was received by Skatteverket, not from the move-in date.
Within a week after the move, 25 § folkbokföringslagen (the Swedish Population Registration Act). Skatteverket does not specify the earliest day, but registers the new address at the earliest on the move-in day.

What happens if I notify too late?
Then the new address does not apply from the day you moved in. If you notify more than a week after the move, the address applies from the day the notification reached Skatteverket.

How long does it take for the address to change?
If the move date has already passed and the notification is complete, it takes only a few minutes in the e-service, according to Skatteverket. If you notify before the move, the new address is registered when the move date arrives.

Can I report my move without BankID, on a form?
Yes. The e-service requires an e-ID, but you can instead fill in the form Flyttning inom Sverige (SKV 7845) and send it in. The notification must be in writing.

Which authorities get my new address?
Skatteverket passes the address on to Försäkringskassan (the Swedish Social Insurance Agency), CSN (the Swedish Board of Student Finance), Transportstyrelsen (the Swedish Transport Agency), Pensionsmyndigheten (the Swedish Pensions Agency), Arbetsförmedlingen (the Swedish Public Employment Service), Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) and Lantmäteriet (the Swedish land registration authority), among others, and to municipalities and regions. Larger banks and insurance companies get it through the SPAR register. What you need to notify yourself is in the checklist for changing your address when you move.

Why does population registration matter?
It governs, among other things, which tax you pay and in which municipality, and your right to benefits and allowances. In Gothenburg, resident parking and preschool places also depend on it: you can only apply for resident parking when you are registered at an eligible address, and the preschool place guarantee applies to those registered in Gothenburg. Does the flyttanmälan change the address for my mail?
Flyttanmälan and mail forwarding are two different things. If you want mail with the old address to follow you, you order mail forwarding from Svensk Adressändring, which says that the notifications are made separately. From the other direction, Skatteverket says that mail forwarding does not change your population registration. How to do it is explained in the guide to mail forwarding.

How do I do flyttanmälan for children?
As a guardian, you report the move for the child, and a child who has turned 16 can make their own flyttanmälan. If you are moving together from the same address, it is enough for one guardian to make and approve the notification in the e-service. If the guardians live apart, the one who lives at the child's current address makes the notification, and the other gives consent within seven days in the e-service Give consent or on a form. If you disagree, Skatteverket investigates where the child actually lives most and attends school or preschool, and decides on the population registration. If the child moves to an address where no guardian lives, both must approve the notification. The rules apply to children under 18 years. How do I report a move to Sweden to Skatteverket?
What applies to the rest of the move home is stated in the guide to moving home to Sweden. You who are moving to Sweden and plan to live here for at least one year should in most cases be registered in the population register here. This also applies to Swedish citizens who are moving home. You report in the Tax Authority's service Move to Sweden, and you and your family members who are moving with you must then visit a service office in person for an identity check. Bring all identity documents in original, and the residence permit card if you have one. Skatteverket states that it takes approximately four weeks before the case gets a handler. Put your name on the door or mailbox so that Skatteverket can reach you. Can I block my address with Skatteverket?
There are two different blocks. One is the block against unauthorized change of address, which prevents someone else from moving you in the e-service. You turn it on yourself, and how it works is stated in the post about unauthorized address change. The other is protected personal data, for those who risk being exposed to violence, threats, harassment or serious harassment. Skatteverket decides on secrecy marking (form SKV 7708), which is a warning signal to the authorities to carefully examine before disclosing the information, and on protected population registration (form SKV 7706), where you remain in the old municipality and your address is replaced with the Tax Authority's. Fictitious personal data, with a new name and personal identity number, are decided by the Police. Only ID theft is not enough for protected personal data. How do I contact Skatteverket about the change of address?
Call Skatteupplysningen on 0771-567 567, weekdays from 8 am to 4 pm, or +46 8 564 851 60 from abroad. You can also write via the contact form on Skatteverket's website or visit a service office. Remember that the address is registered at the earliest on the move-in day, so a notification made before the move is not visible in the population registration until then.

What does folkbokföringslagen say about flyttanmälan?
Folkbokföringslagen (1991:481) governs both where you should be registered and how you notify. You are considered to be resident where you regularly sleep, at least one night a week under normal circumstances. If you move, you should notify Skatteverket within a week, and the notification should include, among other things, the date, the new address, the apartment number and who has provided the accommodation. If you are moving abroad, you should notify this no later than one week before departure. Common questions
What is the difference between flyttanmälan and address change?
Flyttanmälan to Skatteverket changes your population registration and is free. The change of address with Svensk Adressändring applies to the post, and if you want post with the old address to be forwarded, you order forwarding, which costs. The notifications are made separately.
