Move between cities in seven steps

Step 1: Arrange the housing in the new city first, and cancel the old one when you know the move-in date. The notice period for a rental apartment is three months to the end of the month.

Step 4: If the employer is moving you: ask about relocation allowance before you book. It is tax-free when you change workplace.
Step 5: Register the children for school and nursery in the new municipality.
Step 6: Make flyttanmälan (notification of change of address) to Skatteverket at the latest one week after the move.

Removal company or trailer one way?

A removal company packs, carries, drives and carries in, and the work gives RUT tax deduction. If you drive yourself, you avoid labour costs but do all the work, and the rent for the car and fuel gives no deduction. Over a long distance, you do not want to drive back, so choose a rental company that allows you to leave the trailer or car at the new location. Oneway by Brenderup publishes approximate prices from 1,250 kr for a trailer of 4.5 cubic metres to 1,550 kr for 11 cubic metres, read on 5 October 2026. How to calculate the cost

With a removal company, the cost is the hours multiplied by the number of people, plus car and materials. On a long move, the time and journeys between the locations are also counted, so ask the company to specify the work, car and journeys separately in the quote. Only the work gives RUT tax deduction. Also ask about a fixed price: then you know the final sum in advance, if the quote describes the move correctly.

If you drive yourself, you add up the rent for the trailer or car, the one-way fee, fuel and any bridge tolls. Do not forget double rent if the notice period for the old home overlaps with the new one. Removal companies in the cities

We have checked removal companies in 23 cities. Choose the city you are moving from, as it is usually where the company starts. Ask in the quote if the company travels to your new location.

Population registration and municipal tax

Make flyttanmälan to Skatteverket before you move or at the latest one week after. Then the new address applies from the day you move in, and authorities such as Försäkringskassan (the Swedish Social Insurance Agency) and CSN (the Swedish Board of Student Finance) receive it automatically. You pay municipal tax to the municipality where you were registered on 1 November the previous year. If you move to a municipality with a different tax rate in December, the old municipality's tax applies for the whole of next year. The job: relocation allowance and double residence

If your employer pays for the move when you change your place of work, the compensation is tax-free, also from a new employer. If you keep your home in the old location, you can deduct the new home for up to two years if the distance is over 50 kilometers and you stay overnight at your place of work. Arbetsförmedlingen (the Swedish Public Employment Service) does not pay for the move, but can provide travel grants for a job interview in another location. School, preschool and healthcare

The school responsibility follows population registration: when the child is registered in the new municipality, that municipality should arrange school and preschool. The child can still attend the old school for the rest of the school year, and preschool should be offered by the new municipality within four months. What does it cost to move to another city?

It depends on how much needs to be moved and how far. With a removal company, you pay for the work, the truck and the trips, and only the work gives a RUT tax deduction. Can I get a RUT tax deduction for a move to another city?

Yes, for the removal company's work with packing, carrying, loading and transporting your belongings between homes. The removal van, fuel, boxes and trips on the invoice give no deduction.

Will Arbetsförmedlingen pay for the move if I get a job in another city?

No. The regulation on moving allowance was repealed in 2015. If you are registered with Arbetsförmedlingen, you can however get travel allowance for a job interview in another location.

To which municipality do I pay tax after the move?

You pay municipal tax to the municipality where you were registered on 1 November the previous year. If you move after 1 November, you pay the old municipality's tax for the whole of next year.

Can the child stay in the old school?

The school responsibility follows the population registration, so it is the new municipality that should arrange school. According to the Education Act, the child can still attend the old school for the rest of the school year.
