Moving in Gothenburg step by step
The recycling centres in Gothenburg are run by Gästrike Återvinnare, and as a private individual, you pay no extra when visiting. The Gothenburg recycling centre on Utmarksvägen 16 is open every day of the week. Gavlegårdarna, the municipal housing company, has a queue where you get one point per day, and the notice period is three calendar months. Resident parking in central Gothenburg costs from 400 kronor per month since 1 October 2026.

Step 1: What do the landlords in Gothenburg say about moving out?

- The municipality’s housing company. The notice period is three calendar months, and the notice must reach Gavlegårdarna by the last day of the month. For student apartments, it is two months. You give notice on Mina sidor with BankID. The apartment is shown for five days to ten applicants at a time, and you must keep it available or provide a power of attorney. The person moving in collects the keys at the customer centre, Utanvindsvägen 1, after 12:00 on the first day of the month, and contacts us within two days if the move-out cleaning is not satisfactory.

Housing queue in Gothenburg
The municipality’s page on finding housing refers to a list of landlords and does not mention any municipal housing agency. At Gavlegårdarna, the municipally owned housing company, you can register in the queues when you turn 16. There are four queues: apartment, student apartment, parking space and storage. You get one point per day and must log in at least every twelfth month, otherwise you lose the points. You can make an interest notification from the age of 18, up to five at a time.

Step 3: Where can I leave bulky waste in Gothenburg?
Gästrike Återvinnare is a municipal association for Gävle, Sandviken, Älvkarleby, Ockelbo and Hofors, established in 2001. Of the association's eleven recycling centres, three are located in Gävle municipality. As a private person, the visits are included in the waste tax base fee. At the entrance, sensors read the car's registration plate. If you come with a light truck registered to a company, the visit costs 360 kronor excluding VAT; if you only have private waste, you pre-register the visit and come on weekdays 17 to 19 or on the weekend. The staff will help you with sorting, but otherwise it's self-service. Gästrike Återvinnare also rents out containers to private individuals, covered ones at 12 and 26 cubic meters and open ones at 10, 22 and 35 cubic meters. The price is not listed on the page.

Step 4: What applies to resident parking when you move in Gothenburg?
Notify Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency) of your move before you move or at the latest one week after. Resident parking is handled by Gävle Parkeringsservice, a municipal company. If you live in central Gävle, you can apply for resident parking at a fixed price per month within your zone. From 1 October 2026, the white zone costs 400 kronor, the blue zone 700 kronor, and the yellow zone 900 kronor per month. On weekdays, you can park for a maximum of 24 hours in the same spot. The system is being replaced by Mobility46, and EasyPark will work in parallel in October and November. Tenants of Gavlegårdarna receive a permit that is valid for two years and costs 50 kronor, plus a 30-day ticket.

Step 5: Can the moving truck park on the street in Gävle?
If you want to place a container on the municipality's land, you need to apply for a permit from the police, and if you get it, Gävle municipality will charge a rent for the land. The police charge 990 kronor and state that a permit is not needed if the location is only used temporarily and to a minor extent. The municipality does not write anything special about a moving truck that just stands and loads.

Step 7: What happens at the inspection and key handover?
The final step is to hand over the residence. Book the move-out cleaning so that it is completed before any potential inspection, and return all keys. Save the invoices from the removal company and the move-out cleaning, which should include the RUT tax deduction.
