Move to Gotland step by step
Region Gotland is a single municipality, and all households leave waste free of charge at the region's seven recycling centres. The moving load goes with Destination Gotland's ferry from Nynäshamn or Oskarshamn to Visby, and heavy lorry or light lorry over 9 metres is booked as freight. At Gotlandshem, the region's housing company, the notice period is three months from the next month change. Resident parking is only available inside the city wall in Visby.

Step 1: What do landlords in Gotland say about moving out?
A rental apartment has a three-month notice period to the next month change, according to jordabalken (the Swedish Land Code). This is what the largest landlords in Gotland write about notice, inspection and keys.

- Region Gotland's public housing company. The notice period for an apartment is three months, counted from the next month change, and you give notice via My pages with BankID. Garage, parking and storage cease at the same time. Gotlandshem inspects the apartment before you move and sends the time via SMS and email. During the move-out, a cleaning inspection is carried out, and rejected cleaning can be rectified at your expense. A property technician contacts you about the time and place for key handover. In the company's areas, there is generally a ban on cars, but removal companies have permission to drive in, and Securitas can fine cars that are standing in the area.

Housing queue in Gotland
The region's housing page refers to Gotlandshem, the municipal housing company owned by Region Gotland, and does not mention any municipal housing agency. In Gotlandshem's housing queue, you can register from 16 years old and actively search for housing from 18. One day in the queue gives one point, and you must log in at least once a year. Gotlandshem also has queues for parking and storage.

Step 3: Where do I leave bulky waste in Gotland?
Region Gotland runs seven recycling centres, and all households in the region visit them free of charge. There you can leave bulky waste such as furniture, wood, metal scrap, electrical and electronic waste with appliances, textiles, hazardous waste and construction and demolition waste from households, if it does not come from commercial activities. Packaging and newspapers can be left at one of the 36 recycling stations. The times change from week to week and are listed on the region's page for each recycling centre.
Region Gotland has seven recycling centres: Visby recycling centre, Slite recycling centre, Hemse recycling centre, Klintehamn recycling centre, Burgsvik recycling centre, Ljugarn recycling centre and Fårösund recycling centre.

Step 4: What applies to resident parking when you move in Gotland?
Report the move to Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency) before you move or at the latest one week after. Resident parking is only available in Visby city centre, for those who are registered and permanently resident in a property within the city walls and own or lease a car. The permit gives free parking within the walls and up to five days on spaces marked Resident outside the walls, but no reserved space. It costs 3,400 kronor for 360 days or 400 kronor for 30 days. The application costs 320 kronor, and this fee is charged even if you are rejected.

Step 5: Can the mobile car stand on the street in Gotland?
If you want to place a container on a public place, you apply for a permit from the police, who will forward the case to Region Gotland for a statement on the land. If you get a permit, the region also charges a rent for the land, and a container on the pavement may require a traffic management plan. The police's processing time is currently 12 to 14 weeks, and the fee is 990 kronor. The police state that a permit is not required if the place is only used temporarily and to a negligible extent. The region does not write anything special about a moving truck that just stands and loads.

The ferry with the moving load
Destination Gotland operates ferries between Visby and Nynäshamn and between Visby and Oskarshamn on behalf of the state, with two trips per day on each route during the low season and three during the high season. In Visby, you drive in with your vehicle at Färjeleden 16. Car, trailer, van and light truck up to 9 meters can be booked as a regular trip, and the price depends on how many people want to travel at that time. Heavy truck, light truck over 9 meters and vehicle without driver are booked through freight booking (0498-20 13 20, weekdays 9 to 16), where you specify registration number, length and weight. The freight costs 287.50 kronor per meter including VAT, and a ticket for the driver is added. The shipping company does not transport loose goods or loose pallets. The government's travel grant for those registered on Gotland only applies to the passenger ticket, not the car. The shipping company's pages do not specify a height limit, and none of the companies we have checked write about booking the ferry for you.

Step 7: What happens at the inspection and key handover?
The final step is to hand over the apartment. Book the move-out cleaning so that it is completed before any inspection, and return all keys. Save the invoices from the removal company and the move-out cleaning, which should include the RUT tax deduction.
