How to move without a car in Gothenburg?

Can you move with tram and bus?

For what you can carry, yes. According to Västtrafik's travel terms, you can bring baggage that you can carry on your own without cost. It must not hinder other passengers, take up seats, block escape routes or obstruct the driver's view, and bulky baggage must be placed in a suitable location. You are responsible for the baggage and any damage it causes. Bicycles are not allowed on trams and buses.

It works for clothes, bags and a few boxes at a time, especially outside rush hour. Furniture and full boxes of books do not. If you live near the new address, you can carry the light items with public transport in the weeks before and let a company or transport help take the furniture on moving day. It will be fewer hours for the company. That is our advice.

What does transport help cost for a few pieces of furniture in Gothenburg?

Ungdomskraft, which operates in the Stockholm and Gothenburg areas, publishes fixed package prices. On 5 October 2026, the cost was 595 kronor for one person with a car, 995 kronor for two people with a van for one or two items, and 1,495 kronor for three to six items. The first 20 kilometres from Gothenburg Central Station are included, and then there is a price per kilometre and a small booking fee. You see the total price before you book. Haardwork on Ringön transports furniture from point A to B with removal help, but does not publish prices.

Does the transport help provide RUT tax deduction?

Skatteverket gives RUT tax deduction when a company with F-tax moves your household between your homes, and it also applies to paying for a driver who drives your household. The deduction does not apply to the rental of a moving truck or fuel, or to the transport of household from a furniture store or to and from another private person. Ungdomskraft writes that their transport help does not give RUT tax deduction, but that moving and lifting help does. Therefore, ask which service you are booking before counting on the deduction.

What is Tiptapp?

An app where you post an ad with a picture and the price you are willing to pay, and a so-called helper with their own car picks it up. Tiptapp describes the task as an extra income and writes that no licenses or special permits are required as long as the helper does not drive professionally. You can add insurance. RUT tax deduction requires a company with F-tax, so do not count on deductions for a helper who drives on the side. This is our assessment.

When is a removal company worthwhile if you don't have a car?

When everything needs to be moved at once. The company comes with a truck and staff, and the work of packing, carrying, loading and driving gives RUT tax deduction when it is your household that is being moved between your homes. Can you rent a removal van without having your own car?

Yes, if you have a driving licence. Transportstyrelsen (the Swedish Transport Agency) writes that a B licence is sufficient for a car and a light lorry with a light trailer, where the total weight of the vehicle combination is at most 3,500 kilos. Olivedals Biluthyrning in Olivedal rents out cars, minibuses and removal vans and took from 375 kr for four hours on a weekday with 50 kilometres, congestion tax and VAT on 5 October 2026. A hired trailer, on the other hand, does not help, since it requires a car to pull it.
