When does the change of address take effect at Skatteverket?
If you make the notification in the e-service, it takes only a few minutes before the change shows in the population register, provided the notification is complete and the moving day has passed. If you notify before the move, the new address is registered when the moving day arrives. If you have a digital mailbox, you get a message when the move is registered, at the earliest on the day you move in. On Mina sidor you can see whether the notification has arrived.
How to fill in the notification is explained in the guide to flyttanmälan to Skatteverket, and when it fits into the move in step 4, change of address.

Why does the change of address sometimes take several weeks?
If the notification is incomplete, the change does not happen automatically. It is then handled manually, and it takes about three weeks before the case is assigned to a case officer. Skatteverket takes cases in turn and gives no priority. Skatteverket's general guidance on the page about post is that it takes up to two weeks before a notification is registered. A complete notification in the e-service is therefore faster, and an incomplete one can take longer than that.
Common reasons why a notification has not been registered are that some detail is wrong, that you have sent several notifications that Skatteverket has to compare, or that you are moving in with someone who first has to answer whether you live there. The person living at the address has three working days to reply. Do not send in a new notification for the same move.

When do banks and authorities get the new address?
You do not need to tell the authorities yourself. The information is passed on automatically through Navet to authorities, daily or weekly, and through SPAR to companies. SPAR is updated every day, and a change made on a given day is in SPAR the day after. Banks, insurance companies and mail-order companies are examples of SPAR customers.
You need to tell associations, magazines and companies that are not SPAR customers yourself, and private individuals always. Which subscriptions you change yourself is listed in the subscription checklist for moving.

How long does mail forwarding take?
The flyttanmälan to Skatteverket does not redirect post that is already on its way to the old address. Mail forwarding with Svensk Adressändring does, and it costs money. The service starts at the earliest six working days after you have signed the order. If you send a paper form, the six working days count from when the form arrived, and if it arrives late, post can end up at both addresses for the first few days. You can order at most 12 months in advance.
Prices and periods are in the guide to mail forwarding.

Can you make the change of address afterwards?
Yes, but it affects the date from which the address applies. If you notify within a week after the move, the new population registration applies from the moving day. If the notification arrives later, it applies from the day Skatteverket received it. You can also notify in advance. Add a reminder in Your moving plan so the notification is not late.

Common questions
Do I get a confirmation when the change of address is done?
If you have a digital mailbox, for example Min myndighetspost, you get a message when Skatteverket has registered the move, at the earliest on the day you move in. You can also check on Mina sidor whether the notification has arrived.
Should I send in a new notification if it takes a long time?
No. Skatteverket says you should not submit a second notification for the same matter, and that you should only notify a move to the same address once.
Does the address apply from the moving day if I notify late?
Only if the notification arrives within a week of the move. If it arrives later, the new population registration applies from the day Skatteverket received the notification (35 § folkbokföringslagen).
How far in advance can I order mail forwarding?
With Svensk Adressändring the service can be ordered at most 12 months in advance, and it starts at the earliest six working days after you have signed the order.
