How long does a move with a removal company take?

The companies calculate each move separately. Guldheden states that moving a two-room apartment takes less time than a large villa, that long distances take longer, and that heavy and fragile items like pianos and safes make it even longer. Flyttdax answers the question of how many hours the move takes that it varies, and lists what determines it: the size of the household, heavy or sensitive furniture, walking distance and parking, stairs and elevator, weather and traffic, disassembly and how well the packing is prepared.

Flyttdax also writes that 70 percent of the time is affected by the customer's own preparations and 30 percent by the company's work. It is the company's own rule of thumb, not a measurement we have been able to verify.

When does the time start and end?

The West Swedish Moving Office writes that the billing starts when the moving truck starts at the company and ends when the last item is moved in. Then the team writes a receipt with the end time that you must approve. With a fixed price, what you have agreed on applies instead. Ask your company how it calculates, since the drive to your home is then included in the hours.

For the RUT tax deduction, another limit applies. Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency) only provides a deduction for working time on site with you, and not for travel between the company's premises and your accommodation. Packing, loading, unloading and disassembly of furniture provide a deduction.

What makes the move take longer?

The company Västsvenska Flyttbyrån states that a gate key to the yard can make a difference between a 5 and 150 metre walking distance, and that their removal lorry with ramp takes up two large or three small parking spaces. The company does not charge extra for stairs but takes into account the time they take. It usually carries three to four boxes at a time and wants the boxes to weigh no more than 15 to 20 kilos.

Packing. Everything that fits in a box should be packed in a box, according to Västsvenska, and loose items take longer to load. Flyttdax packs loose goods the day before or on the same day as the move, depending on how much there is, and then the moving day becomes longer. How can you shorten the time for the move?

   Step 1: Clear out before the move, so there is less to carry and drive.

   Step 3: Arrange for lift keys, door codes and parking near the entrance at both addresses.

   Step 5: Determine before moving day where the furniture should be placed, or let the company put all the boxes in one room.

What happens if the move takes longer than stated in the offer?

It depends on why. Konsumentverket writes that you should have a written agreement on what time applies or how many hours the company has. The company can exceed an approximate price by a maximum of 15 percent, unless you have agreed otherwise. If the company is not finished on time, it cannot demand more payment for it, and you can withhold the part of the payment that corresponds to your claim.

If the company is delayed due to you, for example because you have not stated what should be moved, they can demand more payment. Therefore, the quote should describe the move correctly from the start. If something breaks, see what you do in the guide to damage and complaints.

How do you plan the day after the move?

Count backwards from the time in the offer. Should the move-out cleaning be done on the same day, or should the keys be handed over, then add a margin. Flyttdax recommends that the cleaning be done at the latest two working days before a transfer.
