The average wait for an ordinary rental apartment was 9.0 years in 2025, and 21 years in the inner city. Resident parking requires you to be registered in the area, and when you move you change area in the city's e-service. A skip on the street requires a police permit, and the permit must be issued before you put it out.

Step 1: What do the landlords in Stockholm say about moving out?

A rental apartment has three months' notice, to the nearest end of a month, under jordabalken (the Swedish Land Code). Here is what the biggest landlords in Stockholm write about notice, inspection and keys.

Two to four weeks before (our advice)

Step 3: When should I start packing?

Our advice is to start packing two to four weeks before and label every box with the room and contents. If you let the removal company pack, the packing also qualifies for the RUT tax deduction. The boxes do not: Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency) excludes moving boxes, removal van, fuel and storage rent from the deduction. Pack a bag of your own with what you need the first night.

Report the move to Skatteverket before you move or at the latest one week after. Resident parking requires you to be registered in a resident parking area. If you move, you can change area in the city's e-service. The application fee is 300 kronor.

Step 5: Can the removal van stand on the street in Stockholm?

A skip, shed or builder's bag in a public place requires a police permit, and the permit must be issued before the space is used. The city's websites have no page about parking a removal van on the street.

Step 6: Which cleaning companies do move-out cleaning in Stockholm?

Last day

Step 7: What happens at the inspection and key handover?

The last step is handing over the home. Book the move-out cleaning so that it is finished before any inspection, and return all the keys. Keep the invoices from the removal company and the move-out cleaning, where the RUT tax deduction should be shown. Both deductions count towards the same ceiling of 75,000 kronor per person per year. Storage and storage in Stockholm

When you leave your home before you can move into the next. The removal company's transport to and from the storage unit gives RUT tax deduction, but not the rent for the storage unit. The cheapest storage units in all cities are listed on rent storage.
