Uppsala Bostadsförmedling AB is a wholly municipal-owned company that arranges rental apartments from private and municipal landlords in the Uppsala region. The queue costs 305 kronor a year including VAT; you can register from the year you turn 16 and pay the fee from 18. If you are offered a home through the queue, it costs 800 kronor, or 500 kronor for a student home.

Two to four weeks before (our advice)

Step 3: When should I start packing?

Our advice is to start packing two to four weeks before and label every box with the room and contents. If you let the removal company pack, the packing also qualifies for the RUT tax deduction. The boxes do not: Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency) excludes moving boxes, removal van, fuel and storage rent from the deduction. Pack a bag of your own with what you need the first night.

Step 4: What are the rules for residents' parking when you move in Uppsala?

Notify Skatteverket of the move before you move or at the latest one week after. Residents' parking exists only in some areas of central Uppsala. You must be registered in the population register in the area where the permit applies, and the permit is valid only in that area.

Step 5: Can the removal van stand on the street in Uppsala?

If you want to temporarily use the municipality's land, for example a street or pavement for a skip, you need a permit from the police. The police application fee is 990 kronor, and the municipality charges a land rental fee. If a parking ban is needed, a local traffic regulation is also required. The municipality's page mentions a skip but not a removal van that is only loading. In Uppsalahem's courtyards you may stand by the entrance for as long as loading is going on; after about five minutes without activity it counts as parking and a parking charge may follow.

Step 7: What happens at the inspection and key handover?

The last step is handing over the home. Book the move-out cleaning so that it is finished before any inspection, and return all the keys. Keep the invoices from the removal company and the move-out cleaning, where the RUT tax deduction should be shown. Both deductions count towards the same ceiling of 75,000 kronor per person and year.
