Recycling centres in Malmö

Sysav is responsible for the manned recycling centres in Malmö, where you leave bulky waste, electrical waste and hazardous waste. Each adult private person has 26 free visits per calendar year and enters with their driving license or Sysav's app. Sysav does not rent out containers for households' bulky waste. The opening hours change around the holidays, so check them with Sysav before the move.

Does VA Syd collect bulky waste in Malmö?

Yes. If you live in a rental apartment, you can order collection of up to five bulky items. You carry them out yourself to a road where a lorry can stop, as VA Syd does not collect inside the home. It costs 180 kronor for the collection and 60 kronor per item, and you pay with Swish. Homeowners order on Mina sidor and place the items no more than two metres from the property boundary. Refrigerators, freezers, washing machines and ovens are also collected, but not construction waste, tyres, kitchen fittings or doors.

Is the recycling centre coming to your area in Malmö?

At VA Syd's Pop-up Returen, which stops at fifteen locations in Malmö and Burlöv from April to October with a break in July. It is open from 15 to 19 on weekdays and from 12 to 16 on Saturdays. There you can drop off furniture, bicycles, textiles, electronics and hazardous waste such as batteries, lamps and paint cans, and whole items can be reused. White goods, construction and demolition waste, tyres and garden waste are not accepted.

What should I consider at Sysav?

You can only leave sorted waste. If you do not have a Swedish driving licence, you open the gate with Sysav's app, and the 26 free visits apply per person from 18 years old. Treated wood is counted as hazardous waste and should be sorted out. Household quantities of hazardous waste are left at the centre, and for larger quantities, Sysav refers to customer service on 040-635 18 00. Both centres are open from 9 to 15 on All Saints' Day and are closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

What do the recycling centres in Malmö not accept?

Household waste and food waste go in the bin. Car tyres are taken to a tyre company. Gas cylinders, diving cylinders and fireworks are returned to a retailer, medicines and needles to a pharmacy. Explosives and ammunition are taken to the police, but call first. Asbestos and eternit are accepted up to one square metre per customer. The pieces must be no larger than 40 by 20 centimetres in cross-section and must be wrapped in plastic and taped, and you must not split them on site. More than one square metre costs and is left at Spillepengen's waste facility in Malmö or Hedeskoga outside Ystad. Cooking oil is accepted up to 5 litres in transparent bottles.

What happens when the 26 visits in Malmö are over?

From visit 27, each visit costs 325 kronor including VAT, and from 1 January 375 kronor. You pay at an automated machine on site. The screen shows how many visits you have left when you insert your driving licence, and the count starts again on 1 January. You must not borrow someone else's driving licence. If you are driving waste for a parent, it is okay if the parent is in the car and uses their own driving licence. If you hire a handyman or removal company, the company pays for the visit, 300 kronor excluding VAT per time. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes total weight are referred to the recycling centre for businesses, and those visits are not included in your 26. The staff do not help with carrying or unloading, so bring someone to help with sofas, beds and appliances.

Can I leave whole items for reuse in Malmö?

Yes. At Bunkeflo there are containers for reuse of furniture, items such as porcelain, books, lamps and pictures, as well as building materials such as doors, windows, sinks and heaters. The furniture and items are taken care of by aid organisations such as Erikshjälpen, Human Bridge, Myrorna, Emmaus Björkå and Lions. The building materials go to Malmö Återbyggdepå on Grimsbygatan 11, which Sysav runs together with Malmö city. Building materials are also collected at Norra Hamnen. Whole and clean clothes and shoes can be left at both centres, in a bag or tied together. Damp and dirty textiles go to energy recycling.

What do I do with the things that are not coming with me?

Our advice is to sort out what you are not taking with you when you start packing, and take it to a recycling centre before moving day. Then the removal company only carries and drives what is coming along, and the working time gets shorter.
