Step 1: What do the landlords in Umeå say about moving out?

Bostaden · 15,000 apartments in the municipality

The municipality's public housing company. Ordinary rental apartments have three months' notice, student apartments two months and student rooms one month. The neighbourhood host gives notice of the time of the inspection, and the apartment does not need to be emptied and cleaned when it is inspected. The keys must be handed in and the apartment ready by 12 noon on the move-out day.

Lerstenen · 1,800 apartments in the municipality

Notice must always be given in writing, not by email. At the latest one week before you move out, you book an inspection time with Lerstenen's office. Ask for a parking permit for moving day, because most of the properties have parking enforcement. The inspection covers the apartment's condition, damage and the cleaning.

Step 2: Which removal companies in Umeå do you recommend?

We have checked two removal companies in Umeå: Norrland Express and Ordning och Reda. Norrland Express is our favourite. Book as soon as you know the date, and ask for a quote where the labour cost is separate, since only the labour gives RUT tax deduction.

Step 3: Where do I take bulky waste in Umeå?

Vakin (Vatten och Avfall i Umeå) runs the municipality's recycling centres. As a private individual, you can drop off reusable items, bulky waste, garden waste, hazardous waste, packaging and newspapers. Holmsund, Hörnefors and Sävar also have ÅVC Plus, self-service Sunday to Thursday 9:00 to 20:00 after a digital training course. Businesses may not use ÅVC Plus, nor may a removal company driving for you, and hazardous waste is only accepted during staffed hours.

Vakin has seven recycling centres: Gimonäs, Klockarbäcken, Holmsund, Hörnefors, Sävar, Tavelsjö and Botsmark.

Step 4: When should I make the change of address?

Report the move to Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency) before you move or at the latest one week after.

Step 5: Can the removal van stand on the street in Umeå?

In an area with a parking ban, you may stop to load and unload. There is no time limit, but some activity must be going on between the van and the building, otherwise the van counts as parked. A skip on the municipality's land requires a permit from the Police under the Public Order Act. You apply in the municipality's form, which is passed on to the Police, and the municipality invoices the land rent afterwards.

Step 7: What happens at the inspection and key handover?

The last step is handing over the home. Book the move-out cleaning so that it is finished before any inspection, and return all the keys. Keep the invoices from the removal company and the move-out cleaning, where the RUT tax deduction should be shown. Both deductions count towards the same ceiling of 75,000 kronor per person per year.
