Recycling centres in Umeå

Vakin (Vatten och Avfall i Umeå) runs the municipality's recycling centres. As a private individual, you can drop off reusable items, bulky waste, garden waste, hazardous waste, packaging and newspapers. Holmsund, Hörnefors and Sävar also have ÅVC Plus, self-service Sunday to Thursday 9:00 to 20:00 after a digital training course. Businesses may not use ÅVC Plus, nor may a removal company driving for you, and hazardous waste is only accepted during staffed hours.

What do the recycling centres in Umeå not accept?

Food and household waste goes in the brown and green bin at home, and cat litter in the bin bag in the green one. Medication is returned to the pharmacy. Needles are wrapped well and put in the regular bin bag. Gas cylinders and carbon dioxide cartridges are accepted by the retailer. Tyres are subject to producer responsibility and are returned to a retailer or a tyre workshop. Scrap cars go to car dismantling, and fireworks, ammunition and weapons to the Police. Larger quantities of hazardous waste, such as containers with waste oil or a lot of asbestos, are returned to a company that is authorised to handle hazardous waste.

How do I leave hazardous waste and asbestos in Umeå?

Hazardous waste includes, among other things, paint and lacquer residues, solvents, spray cans, fluorescent tubes, batteries and electrical waste, i.e. items with a cord or battery. Leave chemicals well packaged, preferably in their original packaging or labelled. If you do not know what it is, write unknown contents, and different types must not be mixed. Asbestos and eternit are wrapped in plastic. Smaller quantities, such as individual eternit plates or a little pipe insulation, can be left at the recycling centre. Lawn mowers, trimmers and snow blowers must be emptied of fluids before you arrive.

How do I prepare the moving load for the recycling centre in Umeå?

Sort already at home, in the car or on the trailer, so that similar materials are collected. Then it goes faster to throw in the right container on the ramp. Secure the load. If you leave waste in a bag, the bag must be transparent, and insulation is placed in a transparent bag or sack. The staff at Gimonäs tell you where things should be sorted, but you unload yourself. Furniture and items that can be used again can be left for reuse at all Vakin recycling centres. Partner companies repair them and sell or lend them out. There are also Give & Take rooms where you can leave things or take something home. At the larger centres, you can donate sports and outdoor equipment to Fritidsbanken.

What do I do with the things that are not coming with me?

Our advice is to sort out what you are not taking with you when you start packing, and take it to a recycling centre before moving day. Then the removal company only carries and drives what is coming along, and the working time gets shorter.
